Wood Artist Kazuto Yoshikawa produced this series of soup sized bowls from a beautifully patterned spalted maple finished with a fuki-urushi (lacquer) coat. The bowls were left to dry naturally allowing them to warp slight in the process taking on more organic, less symmetrical shapes.

After shaping the bowls, Yoshikawa selectively applied Japanese lacquer, using a technique which involves repeatedly applying and wiping off the lacquer to allow the natural occurring pattens of the spalted wood to show through. The urushi coat also serves to protect and strengthen the wood.
