Kakishibu Linen Pouch
Kakishibu Linen Pouch / 11cm x 26.5cm
den Tajima Kishiko hand-dyes her textiles with kakishibu and a variety of mordants including aluminum, titanium and copper. Dyeing with persimmon tannin (kakishibu)dates back to ancient Japan and the technique produces a range of distinct earthy tones from muted oranges to burnished browns.
The linen pouch can be used for carry small objects or laid flat for use as a small tea mat.
Kishiko-san compares her passion for dyeing to her fondness for the darkroom work she did while studying photography in college and working as a photo assistant. She sees similarities in both processes, creating shadows and tones in her textiles through changes in temperature, light and duration.
*** This item may have streaks, patches and spots that result from the dyeing process.
